The Importance of Sleep for Health and Productivity

What do I do when I don’t sleep at night?
  • Sleep is characterized as a restorative period that occurs after work, during which the body temporarily halts certain functions and activates various hormones that facilitate recovery to a normal state. In this phase, the body generates electrical activity, repairs damaged tissues, supports the growth of other body parts through metabolism, and addresses certain illnesses while sleeping. For instance, during a fever, body temperature often rises above normal. Sleep can aid in lowering this temperature back to normal, which is evident when the body sweats to cool down elevated temperatures during rest.
  • According to the Sunnah of the Prophet (saw), the ideal duration of sleep is between 6 – 9 hours per night to ensure the body has adequate rest for daily activities. Furthermore, taking a brief nap before Dhuhr is deemed advantageous for health in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet (saw). Therefore, when you feel sleepy at night, a quick nap can be beneficial in helping your body function optimally during the day.
  • I find myself not sleeping when I have an increased workload. This typically occurs when I receive extra orders as a freelancer that require quick turnaround. For example, if the standard delivery time is 3 days, but the client wants it completed in 1 day. Consequently, my sleep time decreases due to the pressure of completing the necessary tasks. Sometimes these tasks can be challenging and complex. There are instances when I either do not sleep or have very late sleep, which is disheartening because my performance significantly declines during those periods. The desire to sleep intensifies at such times, emphasizing that sleep is crucial for the body’s well-being.
  • Additionally, I believe that instead of sleeping, I should focus on completing video games or achieving higher scores, particularly in platform games like those on Steam. Gamers usually congregate online, and it is common for both younger people and middle-aged adults to play late into the night or even forgo sleep to keep up with games. Honestly, this practice is highly discouraged as playing late at night is detrimental to health and adversely affects daily routines. This may lead to unproductivity in the following days, as it becomes difficult to wake up, often resulting in waking late, typically in the afternoon.
  • My schedule tends to fluctuate based on the volume of tasks or orders I receive, along with ongoing responsibilities that need to be completed. This is when I usually dedicate time to additional work to earn income for my daily needs. Most of my time is spent working late at night and sleeping at odd hours.
