Essential Guide to Game Design Documents and Prototyping

  • What is defined as a specific question seeking an answer. It is also used in research and methodology to uncover the causes of a problem and to broaden the scope of the inquiry. This process aids in generating multiple solutions and answers once applied.
  • Something refers to half of a thing being discussed, described specifically from a person’s perspective. It also denotes an object or item included in the selection of that thing.
  • Most is a term used to indicate a high value of an object, typically greater than one or two in numerical terms. Most falls into the category of being likely chosen compared to other options or selections of the object.
  • People refers to a certain segment of the community, group, or citizens based on the region and country where the individual resides. The term ‘people’ is selected based on the collective that is often mentioned. It signifies a group rather than a single individual living within a specific area.
  • Don’t is a word that acts as a negative form of the verb in this context. The term originates from ‘do,’ which represents the actions of a specific individual that can have positive or negative implications for themselves and others. ‘Do not’ serves as a longer version conveying the meaning of refraining from performing a specific action.
  • Understand signifies a specific concept involving the correct form of action or words that align with the tasks that need to be accomplished. It indicates a lack of contradiction with the required actions, emphasizing that an individual must fulfill certain tasks or responsibilities based on what they have internalized after receiving input.

The field of game development is often overlooked by many, in my opinion. I have pursued this field for some time. This has led me to study and comprehend how to create games for both PC and mobile platforms. Game development encompasses a variety of techniques and skills necessary for bringing a project to life based on the game design document. This document outlines the game’s appearance and functionality. It does this before committing to either a prototype or the full game. From my understanding and learning, a game design document includes various elements. Some of these are mechanics, gameplay, sound, and music. Others involve controls, level design, and characters. It also lists modeling, props, sketches, programming, pseudocode, and more. It can be utilized to create various assets before commencing the prototype and full game development process.

The initial focus of a game design document is the compilation of elements that contribute to the game’s uniqueness. This involves sketching various aspects of the design, including character development, storytelling, level design, flow charts, and other artistic elements. At this stage, the document creator takes on the project manager role. They delegate tasks to specialists in areas like character art, level design, music, sound effects, programming, animation, and more. This completes the stage where the game design document comprises numerous paragraphs and points, which assist in the next phase: prototyping the game to better understand the gameplay.

The second aspect involves prototyping the game, which includes developing it using game engines like Unity and Unreal. These game engines offer free licenses for some users, alongside paid versions for professional creators. Although it’s possible to create a custom game engine, these two engines are typically the quickest way to prototype various types of games across different dimensions and genres. Once a creator decides on the genre of the game they wish to develop, the game engine provides numerous features to achieve that with ease. Generally, the Unity game engine is preferred by most creators due to its widespread use. The tools provided within the game engine facilitate smooth project progress when one is skilled and proficient in using the editor. This is particularly contingent upon the experience of the individual, especially in the gaming industry, where learning contributes to a better understanding and prepares them for future roles to advance their careers.

In conclusion, creating a game design document and prototyping the game are essential ways to present a game to potential investors seeking funding to bring their vision to life. Additionally, supporters can contribute by sharing ideas for improvements within the community. This phenomenon is particularly evident among indie games that often struggle with funding, especially within small teams. In contrast, larger companies can develop games more effectively due to investments from partners, enhancing their sales and ensuring their presence at the top of the market. Indie games typically operate below this level, making it likely that many people will overlook their creation and distribution online, where strong marketing and financial backing are crucial.
