The last time I took a risk was in 2020 when I decided to purchase something online from Shopee at a low price. At that moment, I was facing a tough time, as I needed a laptop for work, and there were many high-quality items available in the market. While searching, especially on Shopee for a good gaming laptop, I stumbled upon an offer with an incredibly low price, which prompted me to place an order. I noticed that the seller was new, but I was unsure whether they were legitimate. Typically, Shopee sellers can vary, with some selling products without having verified accounts, and I took a financial risk by proceeding with the transaction. During my initial experience with this seller on Shopee, I found a good gaming laptop at a really low price, which encouraged me to go ahead and place an order.
During a few hours of placing the order, it was either canceled or the item became unavailable, and I can’t recall those events clearly. I do remember messaging the seller through the Shopee chat system, but they later redirected me to communicate via WhatsApp, which ultimately led to me being scammed and suffering losses. The seller requested a fund transfer for a certain amount in exchange for shipping the item to me. I made the initial payment and received a receipt, but later the seller asked for more money, which deviated from the original price. I quickly stopped messaging them and didn’t make any further fund transfers. A few weeks later, I contacted the bank to report the incident and filed a police report regarding the fraud. It ended in loss and tragedy.
During the period from 2016 to 2017, I took a significant risk that ultimately led to a financial scam involving a substantial amount of money. I received phishing emails from someone I did not know, which led me to read these messages and believe that I was selected to attend a national organization welfare event. At that time, I was quite ignorant about the event and the associated risks, which caused me to transfer funds to foreign countries like Togo and Senegal. I was asked to pay for expenses such as rent, visas, insurance, an ATM card, and the ATM PIN in exchange for a larger sum of money. I was also deceived about the funds that were supposedly going to be provided to me, which eventually prompted me to halt the transactions with those organizing the scam. I have since come to realize the extent of my losses during that time due to individuals who trick others into such schemes, leaving me confused and misled.
In conclusion, during my formative year of maturity, I realized I had made many mistakes that not only resulted in my own losses but also affected those connected to me, such as my parents, friends, and siblings. These events had a significant impact on all of us, and I was unaware of how to file a police report during that time, which still haunted me until the last few months when I finally managed to do it. This has imposed on me a responsibility I continue to carry to this day. I will remember those events even as years pass because their effects still linger, and the tragedies are unforgettable, including the scam that caused me loss and damage. Often, I turn to Allah in the face of all the tragedies and consequences of my actions. Please share your thoughts in the comments.
