The media piece that profoundly changed my worldview is a movie. This transformation occurred particularly during my younger years, as a teenager and child when I often watched various films on television, commonly available on Malaysian channels. In the past, there were channels known as TV 1, TV 2, TV 3, TV 8, and others. These channels typically featured a diverse range of films representing the various identities of Malaysia, particularly those of the country’s majority races. One popular channel, TV 3, showcased numerous films from both Eastern and Western origins, especially during specific holiday celebrations. Additionally, there was a scheduled movie slot that aired every Friday at 10 PM. These films were rare for me to catch, as I did not own a specific computer device for viewing, relying instead on the family television or my cousins’ setups.

I used to watch Chinese films, typically in the comedy genre, featuring well-known actors like Jackie Chan, whose movies often showcase incredible stunts and dynamic body movements that captivate my attention. These films are not only entertaining but also filled with humorous scenes that elicit laughter from anyone watching. Additionally, there are other types of movies from various Chinese actors that I find both amusing and entertaining. Watching these films creates joyful and memorable moments, especially when shared with family members who didn’t have access to certain devices at the time. I’ve always perceived Chinese-language films as representative of Eastern cinema, which is frequently showcased.

Another movie that I usually watch comes from the West, with the most well-known being the Spider-Man trilogy featuring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker. This action-packed series showcases stunning stunts, like climbing tall buildings and swinging between them using webs. I found it exhilarating to watch these films, especially during my childhood, as I followed Spider-Man’s journey. The fight scenes between Spider-Man and various villains committing crimes in the city also left a strong impression on me. I view Spider-Man as a hero who protects the city from common criminals. Watching these movies, particularly back then, gave me a sense of understanding about how the world works.

In conclusion, films originating from the West often showcase unique elements, such as scenes that reflect their culture, including romantic moments like kissing between two characters. I also find their action movies captivating, particularly those that portray crime-fighting as a noble duty, highlighted by impressive stunts. This is my perspective on the Western world, which often depicts urban settings with crime-related activities, while the Eastern world tends to focus more on comedy and incorporates themes of fighting and tricks. Despite their differences, both sides of the world seem quite similar, differentiated mainly by the cultural backgrounds of the filmmakers and actors, who often embody martial artists rather than traditional heroes. I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments section.
