Overcoming Challenges in Unreal Engine for RTS Development

  • Initially, I am designing the model for the RTS game, particularly using 3DS Max and Maya. I am designing based on 2D concept art that has been imported into 3D design. I create shapes for the character from top to bottom.
  • Next, I add some texture to the model, which consists of different colors. The colors include both black and white parts.
  • The animation is incorporated after the character, which is a robot designed to resemble a combat soldier, has been rigged. This includes both walking and idle animations to enhance realism and engagement.
  • I am also building a barracks, a farm, and an archery range. Most of the assets are being tested for export into Unreal Engine version 4.2.
  • I faced challenges while importing the character asset. These included size differences, misaligned meshes, and not knowing how to animate the character.
  • After thoroughly identifying the issues, I successfully resolved them through extensive testing and perseverance, overcoming numerous challenges along the way.
  • For the scripting, I watched several courses on creating a Mobile RTS using Unreal Engine. I extensively used Unreal Engine for prototyping the project. For some of the characters, I implemented path-finding navigation. Players can click on a character to move it to a designated spot on the map.
  • I can select all units for the character to navigate to another location using the navigation system. Additionally, I can remove the selection from those units, allowing for greater flexibility in managing their actions.
  • I added some lighting effects to the prototype of my RTS game. This game was developed in Unreal Engine. The changes improved the overall look of the scene. However, the scene still appears quite dark. I managed to build and publish this prototype as my final year project on itch.io.
