Reflections on Game Development: Ethics and Personal Journeys

  • A topic is a subject of discussion that is specifically related to a given question.

  • To mean indicates the direction toward a goal or desire related to a destination.
  • Discuss is a term used to provide more detailed explanations regarding a subject or object.

The topics I would like to discuss primarily revolve around sharing information online, whether through forums or other methods that aid in acquiring new insights to address and resolve issues. In recent years, a significant topic of discussion has been the influence of religious views on game development, which directly impacts me, especially regarding the permissible and impermissible elements that can affect both players and developers. Over the past few years, I have faced challenges in incorporating aspects like music into games; following the true Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW), including music in game development is considered impermissible, and even playing games with music is viewed as unacceptable.

This topic over the past few years has left me stunned and at times has led me to struggle with completing certain game development tasks, particularly those involving music. I had to consider various viewpoints, such as those of Imam Ghazali, who deemed music permissible in games, and the option to mute the music to adhere to the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW). Additionally, other factors caused me to pause my game development work, especially after encountering games that included elements like dismemberment and gore, which are clearly impermissible. This made me reflect on the need to change such content before presenting my portfolio and advancing in my game development career. One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced in recent years relates to animated objects, which are predominantly used in game development and video games.

While it may be enjoyable to watch others play the game for entertainment, from a religious perspective, the development of games featuring animated representations of humans or animals is deemed impermissible, as it is seen as competing with Allah’s creation. I found myself in a state of uncertainty during those years while conducting research on this topic. Additionally, I participated in discussions related to game development using Unity and Unreal Engine on online forums, such as the Unity website and Discord servers, where users seek to discuss topics they find confusing or require assistance with, and I used to help with these inquiries. Regarding multiplayer games like Mirror, which can be integrated into Unity for RPGs with online modes, these forums provide valuable insights and expedite the development process through collaborative problem-solving and shared opinions.

I find that these topics not only enhance my skills but also help me improve further. Although artificial intelligence has taken over many development courses, human thought and contributions from others have significantly advanced the creative process for everyone’s enjoyment and entertainment. Additionally, I often discuss various subjects, typically involving hardware repair, including electronics like laptop motherboards that require different tools for fixing. This information is often available on online forums, where I find myself in limbo trying to repair a motherboard that has short-circuited, following the advice of others.

At times, I am quite new to electronic repair, so I’ve joined some forums on Discord for help and have watched various videos on fixing and repairing laptops. The most challenging aspect is sourcing the components needed for installation on the circuit board while utilizing tools like hot air reworks, soldering irons, multimeters, and more. Once you identify the faulty components, things become much clearer because the problem is resolved; however, these components often depend on others, which can sometimes mean the issues are more extensive than anticipated. To this day, I have rarely participated in online forums related to electronic repair; instead, I tend to buy new devices to manage my needs rather than attempt repairs. Nevertheless, I do repurpose old hardware for functionality. Although I find myself lacking the time for electronic repairs, I am open to discussing topics related to hardware and components involved in troubleshooting and problem-solving.

In conclusion, I have covered most of my topic related to game development, which involves both hardware and software. I find myself very enthusiastic about this hobby, yet I struggle to secure a job in the game development field. However, over time, Inshallah, I hope to earn a living through this work that is permissible, which will benefit me not only in this world but also in the hereafter. Every day, I exert all my energy to find solutions before I can move forward again, learning the necessary skills for my project, Casual Fluffy Farm. I believe this project has been neglected for several months as I focused on other matters. Hopefully, once I resolve those issues, I can dedicate much more time to it, as long as there are no other external problems I face. Please share your thoughts in the comments.
