The thing I now love but used to dislike when I was younger is reading text-based books without visuals. As a child, I was heavily reliant on visuals rather than text, especially when absorbing information. I rarely read books; I would just glance at the images or pictures in library collections, as these visuals felt essential during that time. My lack of interest in reading textbooks stemmed from my belief that they didn’t increase my knowledge. Even when books contained images and text, I realized that they didn’t engage me back then. I was more drawn to activities that didn’t involve studying, particularly in my teenage years. To this day, I hardly recall any of the textbooks I read during my primary school years.

Usually, the materials I read are based on the teachers or lectures that occur according to the school timetable. I adhere to the principles set by the curriculum that has been established. Despite following this approach to this day, I still struggle to remember or grasp much of what was taught and the textbooks that guide the students 😂. I also need to purchase books for those who can afford them, while others are supported by the government to assist students, especially those from low-income families. This makes books essential for studying at school and it becomes apparent that students need them; otherwise, they can be reprimanded for not having them, especially during class time.

I still recall the day I forgot to bring my books to school and was reprimanded by a teacher for it. It was a difficult moment that taught me the importance of being prepared with my books. Previously, I was only interested in graphic novels, which captured the imagination of my younger self who didn’t fully grasp the significance of such situations. Today, I’ve come to understand that reading is a vital part of life, and in Islam, reading is seen as essential for success in both this world and the hereafter. This realization stems from my earlier years, illustrating that some insights can only be fully appreciated as one matures beyond the teenage years.

The Quran also reminds us in Surah Al-Alaq to read in the name of our Lord, a message translated from Arabic. This first revelation made me realize how the Prophet (SAW) received it and how it has served as a guide for humanity to this day through his teachings. Even now, I love to read any text and spend time immersed in it, as it has become an integral part of my daily life. This passion stems from years of dedication and time invested in exploration. Thus, reading has become both my hobby and my means of gaining knowledge about the unknown. I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments section.
