Cultural Tradition Overview

A cultural tradition from my country that I love is wearing clothes known as Baju Melayu. Less likely i remember when it was the first time I wore these clothes. From looking into old pictures, especially from my old picture i also used to wear this since I was a child. It has become more prevalent to wear these clothes, especially during the celebration of Eid al-Fitri in my country. This event usually marks the end of month ramadhan where the people finish the usual fasting for the muslim. Most of the time, it was my parent that bought this shirt for me and other sibling where i wear it. This happens when going to the obligatory prayer in Islam.

Why wear cultural traditions

Since what i known that i wear this costume or clothes because of going to the prayer in the mosque, or known as surau in Malaysia. I usually wear these clothes because it is the best clothes I have to wear to go. Also, interpreted from some hadith of the Prophet SAW, which said that wearing the best clothes to prayer is a sunnah. This happen on compulsary prayer like Jummah, where people gather together to do khutbah and prayer. I experienced this myself, where Baju Melayu is a must to wear or Kurta, where happen i owned it. For the last few year i also used to own some of these clothes somehow from my parent who give it to me.

My Perspective on wearing traditional clothes

Actually, the Kurta clothes in the last few years are the usual thing I wear because it is the latest clothes that is latest. There are Baju Melayu clothes, but I eventually did not wear them much on jummah prayer. That is because these clothes did not come with trousers. I wear the trouser or known as pants, especially related to the brand Snail. Haha, I also used to wear like that, especially during high school with the Baju Melayu. Though usually baju melayu comes in with the usual set rather than single. The price of these clothes, I believe, in Malaysia is much lower than in other countries.

Following Parent and Sunnah on Cultural Tradition?

As I mentioned earlier, I am wearing these clothes when going to pray in a mosque or surau because of sunnah. It is considered the best clothes I ever had. At some points I used to wear it with the sarung, also known as kain pelekat. This custom wear is usually worn during the celebration of Eid al-Fitri. School also taught me that wearing these clothes, especially during the kind of celebration of eidul fitri at some day. There are also traditional foods being served by the students who bring them to school. I experienced this myself before, which I consider a meaningful event. Most elderly people, especially my parent wearing kain pelekat instead of trousers when going to prayer, where most others do the same.

Conclusion from the wearing cultural tradition

Wearing cultural traditions, especially during prayer, brings reward, especially in a spiritual sense. Many muslim wearing this type of clothing during prayer because it has become a cultural tradition from the past. There are also some people wearing only a shirt, but they believe being acceptable for what to wear. There are no strict rules about what to wear as long as the shirt does not contain disturb image. Moreover, the local cultural tradition is the best clothes i ever worn in my life because it consists of different types of colours and varieties. This comes with the Kurta and Baju Melayu, where it becomes synonymous in my culture for people to wear it.
