Brave Quest: Overview

This Brave Quest game centres around completing a quest at school and customising a Jeep. I created concept art, designed, and programmed it using the Unity Game Engine and Krita. When players approach, staff will interact with them. They must click on the hand icon, which brings up a dialogue box and a list of quests. Each staff member can have multiple quests or just one. Players receive a key reward after they interact and complete the quest. This reward is used to unlock the final door.

Brave Quest: Unity C# Programming and Coding

In terms of programming, I implemented inheritance-based class code for the school staff and the player. The player can move around, while the staff members remain idle. The quest board is not inherited from the player class but contains multiple functions, techniques, variables, and classes. One challenge I encountered during development was managing variable lists. These lists add and remove quests upon completion. This process involves granting rewards, unlocking new quests, and adding additional quests from different staff members.

Bug Fixes and Errors

One issue I faced during development was using variables in C#, such as dictionaries or lists, for the first time in game development. I spent a lot of time fixing errors related to removing completed quests and tasks from the list. Additionally, I needed to add several tasks to the list after players interacted with certain staff, activating the task selection or completing other tasks. Overall, I resolved these errors by using standard debug logs to pinpoint the exact cause, a fundamental step in finding and eliminating errors in the Unity engine.

Brave Quest: Game Mechanics

Players must click a button to travel between levels at the stair positions. I utilised “OnTriggerEnter2D” and “OnCollisionEnter2D” from the MonoBehaviour class in the Unity engine. In the garage, I created a method to change the colour of the sprite. This change occurs whenever the player clicks different sprites and buttons. Once the car is set up, an animation of the car moving will play. Among all the game scenes I’ve created, there are also mini-games or quest systems that players must complete to earn certain medals needed to advance to the next level. This is similar to the Jeep car scene, where players need to interact with the Jeep to customise its colour and choose suitable sprites before completing the game once the Jeep is finished.

Graphics and Animation

Furthermore, while I am not particularly experienced in graphic design, I have taught myself pixel art, which requires adjusting certain objects when played inside the Unity engine. I also realised that the animations for the player weren’t perfect in terms of movement and interaction, so I will need to redo some of the animations.

Conclusion and Challenge

Ultimately, I was able to deliver the game after reworking, testing, and fixing it before finalising it for the client. I also encountered challenges with the user interface, as the mini-game conflicted with the base game. I adjusted the Unity user interface from world position to local position, creating smaller graphics within the scenes. Unfortunately, I was unable to reach the client after delivering the work, so I’m providing the portfolio in written format instead of showcasing the actual game images.

I used a placeholder before integrating some of the UI (User Interface) into the gameplay.

After I have integrated the UI (User Interface), this is how it will look, since most of the icons are for the touchscreen

Players can change or colour the Jeep car parts after completing a quest and receiving a medallion. Differences exist in the Jeep parts that players can modify, such as the hood, rim, emblem, and so on.
