What I really wish schools had actually taught students is how to sit down and read most of the books given to them, or that they bought for class, on their own. My time in school—especially from middle school through high school—was a mix of feelings: I was taught to read in short sentences by my teachers, but there was so much more they didn’t show most students about how to work through the longer texts in our subject books for the year. By my final years of middle and high school, reading had become much more demanding and necessary, because the texts were already being written in that longer, denser style for the upcoming exams.

The way I am writing now is largely influenced by what I learned in school and by my own understanding of how to write in English, even though I still feel that my grammar is not very good because I was never really strong in the language. What matters is that I have tried to use my time well since school by reading books effectively, especially in Bahasa, which is the main language of my country and the language I use when writing on paper. During my reading time, I usually choose books in Bahasa because the language is easier for me to understand and use confidently than any other language at that time.

Why am I reading?

I’ve always loved comics and other illustrated books, where the drawings and imagination of different artists really drew me in, and I was often eager to buy them from bookshops. Most of the time I taught myself to read, although my teacher would also test us and show some students how to read the textbook properly during class. Still, most of my reading practice happened outside of school, in my own time rather than during school hours.

For me, reading is important because it provides information that can be accessed more easily than through other methods, such as looking at examples or graphics. In addition, reading helps a person’s abilities improve over time and helps the mind focus more easily, rather than relying only on immediate thoughts, which many people tend to do. Reading in any language sharpens one’s skills through continuous practice, even with small amounts of reading each day. During school years, reading becomes essential for any student who wants to succeed academically, because it is the main skill they need to be able to answer questions effectively.

In conclusion, I believe that most schools never really taught students how to read long passages, either because of limited time or because other parts of the curriculum always took priority. I experienced this myself, especially in school, where I spent most of my time just writing, looking at the board, or copying what the teacher wrote.
