Best Healthy Eating Habits: Overview
The best healthy eating habits that I have developed are making dua before eating, eating at the right time, and eating nutritious food. I usually eat with my right hand, following the sunnah of the Prophet (SAW), which encourages using the right hand rather than the left. Almost every day, I need to eat in a place that has plenty of water, some pots for cooking, and a refrigerator to store leftover food to be used later. The food that I eat must also be halal, with no pork involved.
Best Healthy Eating Habits: Making Dua
Before starting to eat, I usually raise my hands, especially my palms, and recite a dua. This is really common in Muslim families, where they recite certain Arabic verses to praise and give thanks for the food in front of them. One of the duas is “Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana wa qina ‘adhab an-nar.” The meaning of this dua is to ask Allah to bless the food He has provided and to protect us from the punishment of the Hellfire because of what we eat. Also, there is another dua to recite if someone forgets to read the first dua, especially when they are in a rush to eat. The dua that I read somewhere is “Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu.” It is a short dua and easy to memorise.
Best Healthy Eating Habits: The Right Time
The most common times that I usually eat in the kitchen are in the morning, afternoon, and evening. This usually happens on normal days when I am not fasting on Sunnah days as a Muslim. In the morning, following the Sunnah, one could eat dates, but I do not have those fruits; instead, I usually take out some instant oats. I usually combine oats, a little honey, and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). Then, I combine them with hot water and wait for a little while before consuming them. I rarely drink any coffee, but my parents always drink it. I used to drink it in the past, but not anymore.
Eating Nutritious Food
The next time I eat is in the afternoon, when I am not fasting. This is usually when my mother cooks rice with different kinds of other dishes. These may be vegetables, fish, chicken, meat, or other foods that people cook with refined palm oil. Since I live in a tropical area, refined palm oil is the basic oil I consume regularly with other foods. For me, the food I eat always comes with vegetables to help digestion. Most importantly, I eat chilli, which is especially famous in Malaysia and widely consumed. If you stop by Malaysia, you will find chilli as the most common ingredient in almost every restaurant. Additionally, I also eat some fruits like bananas, apples, and others that my parents usually serve. We can usually find these fruits at the market on weekends.
Conclusion: Best Healthy Eating Habits
In the final hours of eating, especially during dinner, I usually eat what is left over from the afternoon. When fasting, I eat at specific times, usually during Maghrib, when it is time to break the fast. Sometimes, my mother will cook fresh hot rice if needed, since the rice from the afternoon has probably been finished. At night, before sleep, I just take one spoonful of EVOO and drink a glass of water before going to bed. In conclusion, my best eating habits usually involve eating nutritious food at the right times. I also avoid eating late at night since there is information about health risks related to that.
